This marked Maxwell Smart- Agent 86's first jump to the big screen with Don Adams reprising his role from the TV series. I thought Schifrin's score was great. A lot of his stuff has been popping up on CD lately (Kelly's Heros, The Liquidator). I think this would be a score worthy of the "intrada" treatment. ![]() |

I was thinking about this one the other day. I haven't seen the film in years but I honestly don't remember much of Schifrin's score. I'd probably buy it if it was released, if only to read the liner notes for info about the making of the film (and the score). Leonard Stern talks about the film here (about 2/3 down the page): http://wouldyoubelieve.com/stern.html Needless to say, the studio wasn't on the same page as the creative team. |

I've got a copy of the film on VHS. Schifrin took the same approach to scoring this comedy that Bernstein took with Airplane! He made the music "serious" to offset the broad comedy on the screen. The style of the music was very similar to the approach he took with the old Mission:IMPOSSIBLE TV series. I really liked his score. However, there are some places in the movie where it sounds like they edited the music to fit the film with a chainsaw. If INTRADA decided to look into producing this score, I have no doubt they would treat the music more kindly. |
