Good gravy. I only gave this score one listen and I love it already! It has a very prominent main theme for guitar and trumpet, as well as synthesized violin... and there's some interesting percussion/synth motifs in other tracks. I was lucky to stumble upon the old 1988 Varese CD release two months ago, and I paid $25 for it. However, my problem with the Varese CD, minor as it is, is that the sound seems fizzy and muffled. It's not as clear as it could sound. But the sound quality isn't that major a distraction, at least; so I can still enjoy the music. I would no doubt pay another $20 for a good, cleaned up, remastered re-release by Intrada! ![]() The movie was released by Orion Pictures back in the day - presumably, MGM owns the rights now. This is a great score, and it needs to be heard for a new generation, seeing as the old release has been out of print for years. |

I always felt this score was in a sense the "turning point" in Jones' style at the time, as he was veering away from the symphonic sound of his early scores (Dark Crystal, Nate & Hayes) toward the more "ambient" style he adopted in the late 80s (Angel Heart, Sea of Love). In any case it is a lovely score. I only have the LP; I guess Varese did not press many CDs of it (Jones himself said he was unaware it had actually been released!). |
