i posted this originally in answer to someone else's topic, where it died with no comments, so now i'm reviving it for the suggestions page...

every month now, all over the world there are serious concerts of film music, and Bravo say i. but there's one ancestor event that's mostly forgotten that was held way back in 1963, on the night of September 25, billed as "The Composers and Lyricists Guild of America Presents MUSIC FROM HOLLYWOOD." those casual words don't do justice to what occurred at the Hollywood Bowl that night, when Alfred Newman, David Raksin, Alex North, Franz Waxman, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner (aided by Percy Faith), John(ny) Green, Bernard Herrmann, and Dimitri Tiomkin all appeared on stage to conduct examples from some of their most beloved scores.

Columbia Records issued a shortlived commemorative LP which offered 43 minutes of the music played; it was deleted within a few months. 30-some years later, a reissue CD appeared which expanded the concert excerpts to 70 minutes, mostly adding other pieces by the same composers. so far so good...

but here you need the LP liner notes, which quote Raksin (who was Guild Pres) saying more or less, "Sadly we couldn't include all the music deserving of presentation." he was referring to music actually not played at the concert. but the liner notes then say this:

"Neither could all of the music recorded at the Bowl be included in one LP. We salute those who appeared either in person or through their works or both ((my italics)), but who are not included in this recording: Elmer Bernstein, Nelson Riddle, Jerrald Goldsmith, Mack David, Fred Steiner, Frank DeVol, Pete Rugulo, Harry Sukman, Johnny Williams, Jerome Moross, Mahlon Merrick, Sammy Fain, Harold Adamson, Leigh Harline, Hugo Friedhofer, George Duning, Ernest Gold, Bronislaw Kaper, Steve Allen, Ken Darby, Helen Deutsch, Ned Washington, Johnny Mandel, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Johnny Mercer, Harry Warren, Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen, Henry Mancini... and the late dearly beloved Victor Young."

sure, some of the people named are lyricists, and several listed names did show up later in a minor medley on the expanded CD. but holy smokes! "Jerrald" Goldsmith? Johnny Williams? Elmer? Jerome Moross? Hugo Friedhofer? and all the others? could Columbia/Sony actually be sitting on several more hours of music taped that night, with all of the names listed having appeared on stage or at least via works played? where the hell's the multi-CD set??

what a whale of a night it must have been! was anyone now a member of Intrada's Forum present that night? can anyone shed more light on this amazing concert in general? could the tapes be found and resurrected somehow?
