Next week we'll have five CDs. That's right...five CDs, spread out across two albums. The first is a 3-CD set featuring an epic score to an early 80s production. It's a greatly expanded reissue of our previous straight LP issue. If you're only familiar with the score through that mid-rangey LP master only, then you're not familiar with the full depth of the score, as many of the larger orchestral portions weren't included. It's remixed from the original session masters to also offer a crisper and more detailed listen. The second is also an expansion of a mid-00s epic. Greatly expanded that is to 2-CDs. Although please note because some astute folks will notice that a couple of tracks from the original release were not available for licensing, but hopefully the wealth of new music makes up for it.

Hmmm could the 90s title be Apollo 13?

The 80s title is certainly Maurice Jarre's SHOGUN 1980 miniseries score.

Sorry, I made an error and meant to say '00s. By the way, why would a film that takes place entirely in the confines of a space capsule and a control room be considered an epic?

Its 2004's TROY by James Horner an epic no less?

Well, the problem was the facts you laid out for us:

  • mid 90s
  • "epic"
  • original OST album had material that you could not include on the new release
  • score is long enough to warrant 2CDs

When you factor in all that along with trying to find titles that haven't already been expanded, well, there wasn't really anything that fit the clues is there?

Braveheart and Independence Day have already been expanded. Apollo 13, True Lies, Jumanji, Forrest Gump, The Rock, The Fifth Element... all fit SOME of the clues but not all, because nothing fits ALL your clues.

Of course, now that you've revealed its actually from the mid 00s and not the mid 90s, that changes everything!

I thought of that, but Roger said the new release is missing a "couple" of tracks that couldn't be licensed again.

Apart from the single Josh Groban song, what from the old OST wouldn't be available to license?

01 3200 Years Ago (3:36)
02 Troy (5:01)
03 Achilles Leads the Myrmidons (8:30)
04 The Temple of Poseidon (3:28)
05 The Night Before (3:28)
06 The Greek Army and It's Defeat (9:38)
07 Briseis and Achilles (5:19)
08 The Trojans Attack (5:01)
09 Hector's Death (3:27)
10 The Wooden Horse and The Sacking of Troy (10:02)
11 Through the Fires, Achilles... and Immortality (13:27)
12 Remember Me (4:18) Performed by Josh Groban with Tanja Tzarovska

The other epic is ALEXANDER by Vangelis. But I still thinks its TROY.

Thrilled about Shogun.

The 2005 Chronicles of Narnia seems to be the other title.

So....there were only two epics in all of the mid 00s?

If the clue was something like 2010s epic, would anyone even begin to guess? There have been so-called "epic" movies in the last few years like "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and the "Ben-Hur" remake but would anyone really consider those to be epic at all? Their box office takes certainly weren't but I'm more talking about their scope.

Okay, okay...they were "Epic Fails". ;)

Gladiator and Troy, regardless of what one says about either of them, were certainly big, "epic" movies and were successful. That so few of them seemed to fit the bill is what makes guessing this one so easy? I don't know.

Epic, sure, but Gladiator is not mid-00s and I can't imagine Troy having two tracks on the original album that must be excluded on a new release. Such exclusion indicates songs, unless there is a rare case of something like specific music being omitted because of ongoing legal claims which I doubt is the case here.

I'm not talking about Gladiator being from the mid 2000s, since it came out in 2000. I'm talking about at that time, really that decade, those were really the only two major "epic" films of this sort.

I can't find it now, but wasn't Doug listening to the 2cd epic in a recent post, and listed out the brass section? Anyone remember that post?
Moot I guess, we'll know soon - I'm crawling out of my skin for SHOGUN. I'm glad a multi disc set will exist alongside the classic , shorter album , one I've played for an eternity & enjoyed.
