Could the sci-fi score be "I'll Follow You Down"?

I think you just nailed it.
This was a download-only release.

Andrew Lockington did some pretty good SF/Fantasy scores too.
I'm not familiar with this one but I love Journey 2 he did the same year which was a download-only release as well... I love it so much I had to order a CDR on demand for that score to amazon !

It's a good thing Intrada is teaming up with Lockington, I think he's one of the rare new generation composers today that can still write traditionnaly orchestral symphonies (Michael Giacchino, Aaron Zigman, Christophe Beck being part of this group of rare people). San Andreas was pretty amazing !

Well no wonder I guessed wrong, Roger -- San Andreas is not a scifi film :p

City of Ember can be considered as a SF movie, I guess... And maybe the Journey to the Center of the Earth and Mysterious Island too ?

If you know anything about earthquakes -- it's science fiction.

I don't think Varese's cd has a fuzzy sound.
I am not a fan of remasters anyway. I end up purchasing the original issue cd
and then selling the remastered cd on Ebay. Remasters have the reputation of
sounding tinny, muffled, flat and even terrible. I was not happy the way the
expanded release of Gremlins 2 came out. Ehhhh! I will find myself playing the
original Varese cd of that one more often.
