1982. Theaters everywhere. The lights are coming up, everyone’s sniffing, talking. A movie’s been experienced that’ll never be forgotten.
Spielberg’s most popular movie (only) copped four Oscars. One of them went to John Williams. And no wonder. Soaring orchestral movie music had reached another zenith. ET’s music has been in public ears ever since.
So have the albums.
It’s interesting. ET albums have gone through the most amazing transformation. Not just in length, but in sound quality. Look where they started, see where they’ve ended up.
After experiencing the movie, people bought MCA’s premiere LP of the music. Lots of people. But molasses came with the honey.
Williams starts his album with a soft piccolo solo. After a few bars, delicate responses come from solo horn, harp, strings.
One of the gentlest openings ever.
But it was John Williams in one corner, MCA in the other. Original ET albums were noisier than grasshoppers on hot griddles. 40 minutes of music. 8 selections, the subtle piccolo leads.
And snap, pop, crackle! Oodles of static percussion, unwanted, unforgiving.
